Newsletter: Evolving Leadership to Support a Culture of Continuous Improvement

Posted on by CATALYSIS

Martin’s Point Health Care was an early adopter of lean concepts in healthcare, and its use of lean has progressively matured since 2010. As the organization progressed on their continuous improvement journey they realized that a critical component for culture change was missing – lean leadership behaviors. Their improvement team and HR team worked together to develop a system for ingraining the necessary behaviors into the culture at Martin’s Point in order to achieve their goal of “all employees providing ever increasing value to our customers and community, with ease.”

CHVN Highlight: Nemours Children's Health System
Nemours Children’s Health System cares for families at more than 90 locations spread across six states including freestanding children’s hospitals in Wilmington, Delaware and Orlando, Florida.
Known as one of the nation’s leading pediatric health systems, Nemours cares for more than 400,000 children a year through primary, specialty and urgent care locations. Nemours also powers the world’s most-visited website for information on the health of children and teens, KidsHealth.org, and offers on-demand, online video patient visits through Nemours CareConnect.

Continuous improvement is deeply embedded in the culture at Nemours. One component that enables their culture to thrive is their tiered huddles that are part of their lean management system. Hundreds of huddles happen system-wide at Nemours, in both clinical and non-clinical areas. Huddles happen at the frontline and all the way up to the executive team huddle that occurs once a week. In the first quarter over 600 safety issues were surfaced & escalated through the huddle system, providing visibility and urgency around countermeasures.
How to Make Informed Strategic Choices to Improve Patient Care
"Strategy has never been more important, not only for leaders but also for those we serve. It's a new time and strategy engaging patients, staff, and communities that will help us to transform to the Triple Aim; better health, better care, and lower costs. This book refines the way we should plan and execute strategy and offers practical and helpful steps for thinking about the future."
~ Maureen Bisognano, President Emerita and Senior Fellow, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI)
