The Center for Health Care Quality and Payment Reform ACO paper

Harold Miller has recently published a detailed description of ACOs (Accountable Care Organizations) based on expert feedback. This article describes who can form an ACO,what an ACO does, and how it gets paid.It is based on feedback from many of the experts in the field. Unfortunately,it is not the best thinking yet. The missing link is the patient. No where is the patient journey part of the discussion. As we recently published in Health Affairs, understanding the patient condition or value stream is the key to removing waste and improving quality. I am concerned that as ACOs are currently being thought of there will be no improvement in value to the customer. There is a three page executive summary at the beginning which is well done.  HowtoCreateAccountableCareOrganizations1
