The scientific method is a key underpinning of a system of continuous improvement. This is not in dispute. Yet, one of the hardest things to convince healthcare leaders to do is to take the time to learn how to practice it. The most common excuses offered are that it takes too much time or that they already know how to “do an A3.”
There is no doubt that healthcare executives are busy, so we may not be able to address this barrier readily. We can, however, seek to understand and address the reasons for the prevalence of the opinion that an A3 is just a tool. Some of the reasons I have encountered for this type of thinking include:
